- About
The 26-foot tall, wooden Brant Point Lighthouse sits at the edge of Brant Point, directing ferries and ships into the peaceful Nantucket Harbor. The light was topped with a Fresnel Lens in 1901 and made automated in 1965. The light shines 10 nautical miles serving as a small symbol to Nantucket’s magnificent maritime past. A sandy beach and Coast Guard Station Brant Point surround the light.
- History
The original Brant Point Lighthouse was constructed in 1746 when sea captains came together and decided a light was needed to direct whaling ships into the harbor. The lighthouse underwent several reconstructions throughout the years. Fires and storms destroyed the first three, and the next three were condemned and rebuilt. Finally, in 1900 the wooden tower was built that stands today.
The lighthouse was added to the National Register of Historic Places in October of 1987. Mystic Seaport Light was built as a replica in Noank, Connecticut in 1966.
- Visiting the Light
Brant Point Lighthouse is easily accessible by foot or bike. The steps of the wooden walkway are less than a mile from the cobblestone streets of Downtown Nantucket and the path is flat and quiet. Follow South Beach Street, take a right on Easton Street, and you will dead-end at Brant Point.
