Everything You Need to Know About the Nantucket Atheneum

  • Library

The Nantucket Atheneum is a unique library open year-round and attracts all ages and backgrounds. The library is home to over 1.6 million books, digital reads, DVDs, and a plethora of information on Nantucket and its rich history.

The library was founded in 1827 when the island’s two old libraries were combined to create one massive study. It was originally a private membership library until it was reconstructed after The Great Fire of 1846. The library is primarily funded by gracious donors and foundations.

The Atheneum hosts an array of events suited for all ages. There are over 1,300 informational and cultural events held each year enriching the lives of community members and visitors alike. 

Children’s programs occur weekly and feature everything from puppet shows to storytime to STEM activities. Events take place inside or outside, weather permitting, and the library’s expertly trained staff lead all topics.
